Hybrid WordPress Websites
There is no doubt that a WordPress installation enables a website to be put together very quickly, especially if you or your web developer use a free or purchased 'theme' to provide the 'look' you are after.
The process (as described) is also relatively cheap - don't let your developer charge you a fortune!
If your developer builds a theme specifically for your site, expect a much large bill as this requires more skill and labour.
WordPress is also loved by the SEO fratenity who charge significant amounts (generally on a monthy basis) to carry out their 'magic'.
So why would anyone consider a 'hybrid' (WordPress + a separate bespoke system) if all is great with WordPress? The answer is that WordPress uses a considerable number of 'plug-ins' to achieve any extension to the facilities it provides and this means it is difficult to get the precise functionality you require.
Plug-ins are written by companies for a number of common tasks that are not part of standard WordPress. SEO, contact forms, anti-spam, etc... They generally provide a free and paid for option of their plug-ins.
The free version has limited features, whereas (surprise, surprise) the paid for version (generally the one you want) has the feature that you want! All good though?
Plug-in providers come and go. They need to continually update their plug-ins to work with WordPress updates and - sometimes - clashes occur. Some plug-ins are also dependant on other plug-ins - it can get complicated!
We believe that WordPress is good (if slightly sledgehammer to crack a nut) for its original purpose, i.e. an html page and post management system, but beyond that it is far more beneficial to add a bespoke business system as an adjunct to provide the extended functionality of a business website.
